Mais qu'est ce donc la composition en peinture ?

Vaste question n'est ce pas ? voici la définition qu'en donne Arthur Wesley DOW dans son livre.

Composition was chosen as a title because
that word expresses the idea upon
which the method here presented is
founded the "putting together" of
lines, masses and colors to make a harmony.
Design, understood in its broad
sense, is a better word, but popular
usage has restricted it to decoration.
Composition, building up of harmony,
is the fundamental process in all the fine
arts.

Ce qui en français peut se traduire ainsi :

Le mot composition a été choisi comme titre car ce mot exprime l'idée selon laquelle la méthode présentée ici est de "faire tenir ensemble" les lignes, les masses et les couleurs pour construire une harmonie. Le design, compris dans un sens plus large, est un meilleur mot, mais dont son usage populaire le limite à la décoration. La composition, c'est à dire la construction de l'harmonie, est le processus fondamental dans tous les beaux-arts. 

Tous les exercices, ou presque, développés ici ont pour but d'améliorer ce sens de l'harmonie. Comme vous pouvez le voir, je ne désespère pas d'y arriver.
